If the several essays on Arafat's lack of leadership which have been posted around are at all accurate, he is simply trying to ride whichever consensus forms. In that case, as violence continues, the consensus moves further to an extreme.

While its clear that the polarization you speak of is operating on the ground, there are some counter-movements also. For example, Palestinian support for sucide bombing, according to Shikaki's polls, reached its height in March - 76% for -, but is now back down to 52%. So the realization that the intifada was a mistake is spreading among the Palestinians.

That "Spiral of Violence" is still the popular slogan, isn't it, John? I am surprised it has not been picked up by the left to use when the Police shoot murderers.

Yes, the administration could pressure the Israelis into doing something about Palestine. But we have a proven record that we cannot pressure the Pals into keeping their part of the bargain.
