no lawyer. our situation was very straightforward: marriage of foreigner to US citizen. no work-related issues. so it wasn't a matter of getting approval, but rather of getting the incredibly incompetent government to stop losing the paperwork and making other errors. in our case i'm not sure what more a lawyer could have done, except save us a few trips to the immigration office and lighten our wallets. a lawyer may be more useful to somebody in your situation, but i don't know for sure. i'd probably look into it.
