Joe, Yep, I am starting to realize that. I'll postpone my purchase until mid-end year or until the smoke clears.

<My guess is that there is still no point in spending big bucks on plasma until you can get a native resolution of 1900x1080, capable of progressive output, which is I believe the highest of the numerous HDTV format, of course with digital connection to the cable box (and until the confusion surrounding it is resolved).>

The whole situation is a mess. Both my widescreen sets have analog inputs and to upgrade my bedroom unit I was looking at the new 50 inch Fujitsu plasma but I will hold off now until the end of this year to see how things shakedown. Hollywood is basically holding much of the Tech community hostage as they try to enforce their will upon the industry. Don't forget Texas Instruments DLP chips (second generation) will be showing up in televisions come the second half of the year (that Samsung 50 inch is quite the design).

The music industry is also holding the Tech industry hostage in many ways. For example, not letting digital output on SACD signals passed by standalone or DVD players. My reference DVD player has the digital output ready to go but of course they need the okay from 'the industry'. Now we have the HD DVD debate raging. It's a mess from top to bottom.

<PS: One thing that is not entirely clear is where all these leaves TVs with analog based component inputs. >

I would like to know where this leaves me. Maybe give me credit towards a DVI/HDCP set. The early adopters get screwed again.
