IBM tops list of 2002 patent recipients By Margaret Quan EE Times January 13, 2003 (1:22 p.m. EST) WASHINGTON — IBM Corp. was granted 3,288 patents in 2002, making it the largest recipient of patents from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for the tenth year in a row, according to the U.S. Department of Commerce. IBM received more than 3,000 patents for the second year in a row, making it the only company to achieve such a milestone, according to the patent office. In its list of the top 10 patent recipients for 2002, IBM was followed by Canon Kabushiki Kaisha, which received 1,893 patents last year, the office said. The list was rounded out by Micron Technology Inc., NEC Corp., Hitachi Ltd., Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. Ltd., Sony Corp., General Electric Co., Hewlett-Packard Co. and Mitsubishi Denki Kabushiki Kaisha. Fo ur U.S. corporations are on the 2002 list, up from two in 2001. Hewlett-Packard's patent count for the year includes 159 patents issued to Compaq Computer Corp. and 165 issued to Compaq Information Technologies Group LP, the patent office said. "Amer ican corporations continue to build America's technological strength worldwide," said James E. Rogan, undersecretary of Commerce for intellectual property. "Patents promote technological progress and stimulate economic growth and investment in commerce, c reating jobs for millions of Americans." The patent counts used to establish the list are preliminary; final patent counts should be available in April, the Patent and Trademark Office said.
