I've not read the thread yet, just a few of the recent posts. Solon and LPS5 argue that execution is NOT a deterrent. Au contraire it deters murderers from ever being able to kill again. The worst case I know of in Canada was Allan Legere, convicted of murder, in prison, escaped during a hospital visit and KILLED 4 MORE PEOPLE while on the run. 4 innocents, executed by a convicted murderer, who would be alive now if Legere had swung when he should have.
IMO this is the only valid reason for state execution, not revenge, simple protection of society. Now we have DNA testing guilty people will be found guilty beyond any doubt.
Actually having the death penalty may stop people being convicted. A jury may be undecided but with a death penalty the outcome, would be very unlikely to convict, however if the defendant is a long haired punk they might decide to jail him because eventually he will get out.
