You are right, the punishment must fit the crime. Do you think that "ordinary murder" deserves, say, 25- Life? Than what about "egregious murder", like a thrill slaying? How about Life- without- parole? Now, suppose we have a serial killer who tortures his victims before killing them? What are we to do? The only thing worse than Life- without- parole is death! It is our one chance to make the punishment fit the crime, at least roughly.......
