Nam Joong-soo named CEO for KTF

KT's former executive director Nam Joong-soo was sworn in yesterday as president and CEO of KTF, the country's second- largest mobile carrier.

Nam edged out other strong candidates for the No. 1 position at KTF in a win that has stunned industry observers and analysts. Nam was a candidate mentioned by the media - but hardly a favorite.

With Nam's installment, departing KTF CEO Lee Kyung-joon had to end his five-month tenure prematurely. His future plans are not immediately known.

Nam's appointment was finalized by the KTF selection committee late Wednesday afternoon. Nam has led the IMT-2000 project and helped KT obtained the much-coveted W-CDMA 3G mobile license.

If securing a product license through intense negotiations wasn't challenging enough for Nam, Nam will soon find that his new task as a chief of KTF is likely to equal the challenging.

Local media reported that Nam is expected to infuse fresh energy into the company. Nam, 45, is among one of the youngest chief executives of Korea's major telecoms, and his professional knowledge about mobile telecom services will be reflected in the new management strategy of the merged entity.

Some telecom observers said Nam's appointment signals KT's resolve to beef up its wireless services and challenge other wireless carriers in the domestic market.

Nam is also known for his aggressive management style and tends to speed up projects when he is in charge. Against this backdrop, he is now expected to place special emphasis on KTF's cdma2000 1x EV-DO, wireless multimedia and payment services.

Separately, the appointment of Nam is raising questions about alleged favoritism by alumni members. Information and Communication Minister Lee Sang-chul, KT CEO Lee Yong-kyong and Nam are alumni of the same high school and university, prompting critics to claim the makings of a classic good old boys' network.
