No one at Datang Mobile was available to confirm the report. The TD-SCDMA alliance was set up in October and comprised eight domestic telecom companies including Datang Telecom, ZTE Corp, Huawei Technologies, Legend Holdings and China Putian. No foreign companies were invited to join, not even Siemens AG, which is co-developing the technology with Datang. However, the paper said Datang may still exclude foreign companies from the alliance, even though groups such as Nokia Corp, Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics, UTstarcom Inc and US group Tektronix Inc have shown interest in joining. A Datang source said the company is worried foreign companies might not be fully committed to the alliance and that they might only be trying to find out more about its plans. Even so, Datang is still working with a variety of foreign companies to develop the technology. On Monday, Datang is set to announce a joint venture with Royal Philips Electronics NV unit Philips Semiconductors and Samsung Electronics to conduct research and development into TD-SCDMA terminal chipsets and TD-SCDMA/GSM dual-mode reference design. In 2001, Datang and 16 companies including Texas Instruments, LG Electronics and Nokia Corp formed the Commit alliance to develop software, semiconductors and multimedia electronics, including TD-SCDMA chipsets. Datang also has a joint venture with Royal Phillips Electronics NV in Beijing to develop TD-SCDMA handsets Motorola Corp is also working on TD-SCDMA technology. Brian Lu, head of China's handset operations told AFX recently that the group is carrying out research on handsets. China has not yet decided which 3G technology to adopt and TD-SCDMA is competing for approval from the government against WCDMA, backed by companies such as LM Ericsson AB, Nokia Corp and Motorola Inc and which has been adopted by European telecoms operators, and against CDMA2000, a standard developed by Qualcomm Inc. China has been taking a cautious approach on 3G, having viewed the delays and problems experienced by European operators. No timetable has been provided by the Ministry of Information Industry for a decision. LOL!
