Clearly, to maintain your position requires HUGE layers of justification and sophistry, vague interpretations of motives etc.

The Constitution was invented to protect us from just such faith-based judgements.

it seems to me implausible to suppose they are a bunch of jerks, but also that they are in it for venial reasons.
