Of course you BENEFITTED from your time in the marines. Lots of thing would benefit 18 year olds but we don't put guns to their heads and MAKE them do it because except during dire emergencies, this is a free country.

I sense you are feeling some regret for aspects of character not as prevalent today. Integrity, responsibility, diligence, perseverance, and vigor are not character traits easily achieved without struggle and moral footing. You know this and recognize that a remedy is not readily available.

In that the nature of war is so very different today vs Nam and Korea and WW II. I cannot foresee the need for a draft.

The draft is course of action of last resort. It's not about some social issue. It's that simple.
