In one breath you speak sympathetically of tax revolts. In the next you speak sympathetically of slavery as a right of passage. You see no conflict here?

I'm happy with the volunteer military. It's compact, efficient, and well trained and supplied. I understand the appreciation for the qualities the military can develop in character, but that's not its primary purpose, which is to defend our country and way of life. There is a difference between primary and secondary goals. As an example, people should not get married just to make it easier to pay the rent. If the rent is the focus, then maybe a room mate or less expensive place is a better alternative. If the primary goal of conscription is character building and service to country, then this could be done better elsewhere instead of using the military and certainly there are a plethora of good things a non-combative institution could do to serve both purposes.
