I think the tax cut thing was DOA. I think they made it as outrageous as it was in order to solidify the conservative wing in the party. They may have to move a bit more towards the center as the election nears, so they've got this effort to win them brownie points with that group.

Bush's mistake here was to package the dividend cut as an "economic stimulant" vs. something that's just wrong on principle (unnecessary double taxation). Cutting the payroll tax is something working folks can understand (McCain supports, and is more politically palatable), and would more directly provide stimulus..

I'm against the taxation of dividend's too...but the timing is wrong, and this was a politically move bad r/r (he SHOULDN'T have listen to Cheney on this one) IMO (he'll burn more political capital trying to get this passed than worth- likely, he'll give it up early on compromise...I think the Dems are going to get more of their package then the Repubs..)

At least conservative Repubs will be happy with dividend "proposal" if nothing else, and no longer doubt Shrub's (occasional?) conservative warm fuzzies...
