TOKYO (Nikkei)--NTT DoCoMo Inc. (9437) said Friday that it will begin sales on Jan. 23 of a new, reduced-priced FOMA 3G (third-generation) cellular phone handset produced by NEC Corp. (6701).

NEC received about 4 billion yen in development support from NTT DoCoMo to help cover the cost of commercializing the new handset, which is operated with an on-screen cursor and sports two video cameras. As a result of the subsidy, the phone is expected to sell for around 30,000 yen, some 10,000 yen lower than existing FOMA 3G handsets.

NTT DoCoMo plans to provide phone manufacturers with subsidies of around 4 billion yen per model for new handsets released this year in an effort to reduce handset prices and attract subscribers to its FOMA cellular service.
