I have the same experience as your husband, re:reliability and enthusiasm, and I hire both highly skilled and unskilled workers. And I fire a lot of both domestic and foreign workers. It isn't about legals tho', it's illegals. They're veerrry happy to work... the point it is whether we can do better, I'm sure we can. The use of illegales corrupts both them and us, it's a source of disrespect we can do without. We've got enough criminals at the highest levels in Washington <g>.

why with all the opposition to undocumented workers the situation still exists

It's political, the hypocritical GOP claims to favor law-and-order, but simply are focused on the calculus that shows they need more Latino percentage than in '00 to win in '04. The Dems curry the same, favoring illegal actions like continuous amnesties, rather than voter-approved proper registration.

That's why in California Prop 187 passed by a huge margin -- the voters, the owners of this country, are fed up. But the politicians are expert at pandering to special interests, regardless of the law.

RE:"Illegals aren't just in the menial labor market. My husband hires a lot of guys for his construction projects and some of it is highly skilled and pays well even by US standards"

So your husband is hiring illegals and you are bragging about it?

<<<They all have green cards, yet when you have sixty guys and two thirds of them have the same last name even while they are from very different parts of Mexico and Central America, realistically you have to think some of those documents are not exactly genuine even though they are enough to cover the legal liability of the employer.>>>

sounds like documentation fraud if they have the same last name. fourty of the same sirname is a bit much.
