<<how news organization are beholden to advertisers and the larger corporate culture>>

Well isn't that true? Even` PBS - when did you last see Chomsky on PBS, or Lewis Lapham, or John D. MacArthur for that matter. How can Charlie Rose be evenhanded with regards to Palestinians given his main sponsor is Bloomberg?
I largely gave up watching him after seeing him give such short shift to a Palestinian guest - it was a dialogue of the deaf.

some acquaintance with Chomsky
If limited to one non-establishment book, just "Understanding Power", use the index for any particular topic, for worthwhile discussion of issues and contradictions.

Marcuse, Gramsci, the Frankfurt School, and other leftwing thinkers

Not in the same league, a hodge-podge

the bourgeoisie is supposed to have coopted the working class by means of its cultural hegemony

Silly, imo. It's not cultural or mysterious. Clearly documented control of information in academia and media is the issue, cookie-cutter opinions, nothing that doesn't support the hand that feeds them.

news organization are beholden to advertisers ... methods of financing campaigns assure the dominance of corporate influence

Certifiably true -- by what is presented, as much as by what isn't.

I was once on the Left

The definition of "Left" is usually provided by the opposition, just such a hodge-podge of authors and positions as you mention above

"Common sense" is a more desirable position, from reading across the spectrum of opinion. Unfortunately, that spectrum is not available on the media.

Watch what happens tomorrow, for example, there will be demostrations by those who have not been represented in the media. These aren't "Lefties", as much as the administration-supporters would like to say so. While you can find a few, most are certainly not in lockstep with the opinions you reference above.
