So race is equivalent to Provost Discresion? Of course that would only be true if white students are assigned zero and black get 20. The post doesn't exactly spell out enough details to say.

This is what the current case is all about. Black students receive 20 points out of 150 for being black. This, when academic performance as measured by the SAT score is worth a MAXIMUM of 12 points. It is wrong, and that is why Bush has taken the position he has. It is a condemnation of what can only be classified as an EXTREME form of affirmative action.

I don't know whether SOME form of AA should be tolerated. But certainly, where the color of one's skin is more important than an SAT score there is something seriously wrong. I think everyone (including African Americans) are willing to tolerate a certain amount of discrimination. But in this instance, better qualified whites are being blatantly passed over in favor of those who are not just marginally less qualified, but those who are GROSSLY less qualified. This is racial discrimination that is no different from the "sit at the back of the bus" policy of the pre-60s, having colored entrances and drinking fountains, and school segregation. It is racial discrimination against whites. And it is just as wrong as is discrimination against blacks.
