Ted arguing against affirmative action is not ignoring history. Its saying that we want an end to deciding important issues based on someone's skin color. Our history has showed us that it is both unjust and also bad in a practical sense when we practice racism such as Jim Crow, or even less serious racism such as affirmative action.

The problem is that you want to ignore all the years of Jim Crow and hope that it and its effects have gone away. They haven't, and with any abuse, there has to be a payback to neutralize the effects.

If everything were fine and race was no longer an issue, conservatives would not be so concerned with AA. However, the issue is still so sensitive that C. Rice has asked for a kind of retraction......that her views have been misrepresented by the media recently.....that she is not in total agreement with Bush on this issue but its not a big deal.

And C. Powell who has been a strong supporter of AA in the past.......his comment since Bush's AA announcement........"reasonable men can disagree on certain issues and still be okay". Both C. Rice and C. Powell are strong, successful blacks who have made it and they see that there is a still a need for AA in this society. Its really too bad more whites can't come to the same conclusion. Ultimately, AA will make this a much better country.
