On "All Things Considered" a while ago, NPR had a segment on Islamic lending. Some bright person figured out that it's ok if you pay back more than you borrowed as long as you don't call it interest. For example, you can promise to pay back $10,000 but the lender only hands you $9000 and calls the other $1000 lending expenses.

We figured that out centuries ago, of course. And I doubt very much that God can't see through it.

If I were God, I wouldn't mind simple interest (interest on principal) but I would object to compound interest (interest on interest). That's what causes people to become enslaved to lenders.
