I don't use Outlook for that same reason. Eudora is free if you don't mind the ads, and it works fantastic.

Staying away from virus problems is just a matter of reading the attachment extensions and not being suckered by stupid come-on lines in the subject lines. Deleting them will not get them off your system, however. You need to delete them from your trash also.

Keeping your browser updated helps too. For AV I use norton 2002 which scans email as it comes in. Unless it's a brand new virus it never gets to my inbox.
