BTW, my understanding is that when a file is deleted, if there is room on the drive, it is just marked for deletion. When the drive is full these files will eventually get erased.

According to some trade press I've read, in order for something to be erased and not able to be restored by conventional means, a 7-time overwrite is usually required. To keep something from being touched at all, I believe a 36-time overwrite is impossible to recover by even the NSA.

There are programs that can be purchased to do these overwriting jobs. It's something to keep in mind if you get rid of a hard drive with dirty pictures of your mom or something on it. <G>.
