Overkill.
You are talking about hiding something from say the govt, as opposed to making use of something.
Once you delete something (and then again from trash if necessary) it is gone unless you purposely go looking to recover it, and have a program capable of bringing it back.

Buying a program to overwrite something 36 times is silly, unless you really have something you want to hide.

Often running disk defrag will overwrite things that have been deleted so that they can't be recovered by most data recovery tools. All of the files are moved physically on the disk and the FAT table is rewritten. Usually a file will be unrecoverable even if it is partially overwritten(except perhaps to hardcore forensic guys).
