For the overwhelming majority of GSM carriers? No.

Perhaps... though with GSM1x, there is less need for multimode handsets...

Or conversely, for a carrier with both cdma2000 and GSM networks (like Unicom), multimode ASICs diminish the case for GSM1x.

This is a reason why I doubt that Unicom is the mystery GSM carrier trialing GSM1x.
