Mike, I don't think that the US should be a "global policeman" either. We are by default, however, because we have the most powerful and technologically advanced military, and the political will to use it. That's going to engender dislike and resentment no matter what. No nation-state that expects to survive can sacrifice its national interests; a lot of the debate going on now has to do with what our national interests are.

BTW, I don't see the European states agreeing to spend the money to build up their military any time soon, nor can I see them agreeing on how to use it.
