I'm quite happy with what I've already achieved. Being greedy, I want more. For example, I want you too to act for the best. Too see the benefit of a World Government instead of nationalistic tribalism. I'm not sure what you saw as pretend, but my surroundings seem very civilized and while you might think the USA has a monopoly on civilization, that's not true. NZ is more civilized in my book overall [though we have been losing ground rapidly with rampant welfarism and nanny-statism]. Each has its merits. With globalisation, I can enjoy the benefits of both and the redeeming features of China [enormous production at low cost, which won't last long], Japan, whoever makes the coffee etc... Not at all did my reference to nations that wage war and terror on neighbouring nations refer to the Uncle Sam. On the contrary, the USA would not be enjoying my support if I didn't think it the best bet for bringing civilization to a nasty world. I'm not of the 'check your brain at the door' kind, recommended by UncleWest, where even reluctant conscripts are considered a good thing. I'm too old and cynical to hand Uncle Sam a blank cheque. Uncle Sam is also human and subject to the age old temptations which I suppose King George II prays to be led not into. Anyone who is human is going to fail to be perfect. The military mindset is "Follow Orders". It's funny that conscription can be considered part of freedom. Conscription plus follow orders = the defence at Nuremberg. Conscription is immoral. It's merely slavery. If a community can't pay people to defend them, they are probably not worth defending. Slavery has never been a good way of running a railroad. The USSR tried it, but the trains didn't run on time and barely stayed on the tracks. Professionals are better. I hope you aren't thinking I think Osama's gang was justified in attacking the Twin Towers. What do you mean 'far away from the conflicts of our time with their arrogant and self praise'? Did you know that a bunch of Australians and New Zealanders were murdered by Al Qaeda in Bali? Did you know that a Kiwi, Alan Beaven, was in the cockpit of the plane which crashed in the countryside instead of into the Capitol? The barbarians have been coming for a long time Mike. We deal with them. The USA is slow in being forthcoming. It took them a couple of years after WWII was under way before the Japanese made them realize that maybe things were serious. It was a struggle for them to realize that East Timor was the front line against Al Qaeda and Moslem terrorism. Despite the fantasy that the USA saves the world, in fact they act only in their own interests. Which incidentally might help somebody else, but it's incidental. They didn't come to help us when we needed help. They do come to help us when we don't want help. You get help whether you want it or not if it's in the USA interests to provide it. Climb inside your bunker and pull the door shut if you like. That's what Albania did. North Korea too. There are 5 billion other people to be going on with. You can produce your own oil and make your own gadgets which Chinese currently produce at very low prices. I'm sure you'll be as happy as Shrodinger's Cat. Pull out of South Korea, Japan, Saudi Arabia, Germany, Kosovo and all around the world if you like. It'll save the taxpayer a lot of money and many of the locals won't mind. The USA saving the world is obviously not the perspective that a lot of people around the world share with the USA. It's not because they're all Eurowimp commies. The last lot of barbarians to come to the door were the French terrorists from Francois Mitterand. The USA was as useless as tits on a bull over that. Now, the USA has had some terrorism and they want everyone to be either with them or against them. Well, the world doesn't belong to the USA, surprising thought that might seem to some people. Nor does everyone in the world want to move to the USA, surprisingly enough. Many Americans choose to live somewhere else. We all act in our own interests and the USA does that too. Please don't come over all 'we are saving the world'. Another frigate leaves on Tuesday from here, to help catch Al Qaeda supporters in the gulf. You want us to stay home? Kiwi SAS troops were high in the hills in Afghanistan, dealing with Al Qaeda people. Kiwi troops were in East Timor on the front lines with Oz troops to prevent Moslem terrorism from Indonesia. Maybe we should keep them all home in future? Arrogant self praise? Shall we run a tab and see who thinks which country is most imbued with arrogant self praise. North Korea is high on the list [with least reason]. USA is high on the list, with most reason. According to a lot of people anyway - who are obviously confused because the USA is the greatest country ever, with the best people, the best technology, the biggest businesses, with the greatest modesty and the most money and anyone who disagrees can go to hell. I suggest a nice cup of tea and a lie down. Mqurice
