Spitzer blames lawyers for Wall Street mess

NEW YORK (CBS.MW) -- New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer, who spearheaded a $1.4 billion settlement with the top investment banks, lashed out at attorneys Wednesday for what he said was their role in the Wall Street mess.

Speaking at the New York State Bar Association's annual meeting, Spitzer said that lawyers had a hand in some of the most flagrant corporate fraud of the last several years.

He said lawyers were integral to transactions, such as those at Enron and WorldCom, which brought down those companies and undermined investor confidence. He also cited the role of lawyers in the quick growth and demise of many Internet companies.

"Who do you think did all this?" Spitzer asked. "Not a single time is there, where a lawyer said, 'there is a problem here.'"

Asked by reporters afterward whether his comments were a hint that he would try to prosecute lawyers for their roles in the Wall Street scandal, Spitzer declined to comment other than to say he didn't have a "radar screen" with which to predict the future.
