I just got an invite to a debate on Iraq in a couple of weeks, featuring Mearsheimer and Walt opposing war and Max Boot and Bill Kristol in favor of it. I felt like telling the organizer, "gee, should be fun, lots of fireworks, but wouldn't it have been nice to have at least one of the four speakers be somebody who knows something about Iraq?"

Party pooper. Will this debate be broadcast, or open to the public?

U.S. Faces Military Consequences for Fighting War Alone

<<...military sources say they are concerned that without a broad international coalition, the United States might win the war, only to lose the peace. The concern is that that the United States could suffer from a harsh international political backlash that could make rebuilding Iraq more difficult. Plus, it could threaten the regimes of some U.S. friends in the region and end up leaving the U.S. military holding the bag in Iraq for decades...>>

Tek: IMO, Bush's arrogance and lack of PATIENCE is getting in the way of making a wise decision about going to war (its not just a question of 'if' but also 'when' and of course 'how')...We're doing a GREAT JOB of antagonizing a lot of allies as we rush to judgement. This Administration has NOT proven to me that Saddam is a clear and present danger to the point where we should risk precious American lives to take him out -- right now....Why has Bush been unable to make a compelling case for going to war...? Why has he waited...? His poll numbers are heading south in a hurry...The vast majority of Americans want a multi-lateral approach to dealing with Iraq that includes full U.N. support before we go to war (John Kerry got a HUGE standing ovation as he gave a foreign policy address at Georgetown today)....Bush has NEVER fought in a war and it shows...IMO, Bush will be a 1-term president and John Kerry will take over in '04 -- I'll discuss this more later. Bush will have to earn my support and he's got a lot of work to do (not just in the foreign policy area but also in the economic and environmental areas).
