Will they also ban use of cyberphones on Segways? They should ban cyberphones while walking as many people can't walk and chew gum at the same time, so they can't walk and talk simultaneously. The Segway does away with the walking motion, so people could manage a cyberphone while zipping along on a sunny day. Talented people might be able to chew gum, ride the Segway and listen to the phone, all at the same time.

<One such group, America Walks
(www.americawalks.org), has fought legislation that would
legalize the Segway on sidewalks, and says on its Web site,
"Nothing that moves faster than walking speed belongs in
the space intended for walking
."

So, they want running and cripples banned? They should change their name to America Waddles. Cripples are NOT allowed to travel faster than a Waddler.

Count Waddlers in Washington and they are few and far between, other than when the Million Man March and the like are on. In crowds, the Segway would be great. Standing up 8 inches higher than the crowd would be great for viewing.

I don't recall many USA footpaths where a Segway would take up excessive space or frighten the horses if used sensibly.

Does America Waddles Inc ban skateboards and skates too? I've seen people on roller blades, which are out of control, brakeless, unstable contraptions. Does America Waddles ban those?

PS: How about this crazy epidemiologist, walking and holding hot coffee at the same time <...On the Brooklyn Bridge, Rick Heffernan, a 38-year-old
epidemiologist walking along with a Starbucks cup in his
hand, asks Mr. Tropea about the risks and whether the
safety mechanisms built into the device could be defeated....
