<<get away with military adventures, and has been going on ever since>> Actually, there was a long hiatus, lasting from Watergate to 9/11. During that time, the "intellignece" community concentrated on data-gathering (without much success; they missed every major event, the collapse of the Soviet Empire, the Iranian Revolution, etc.) Assassinations were illegal. One of the results of 9/11 is that we are returning to the policy that existed from 1950-1973, with Islamic fundamentalists playing the role of Communists. Most people in the world (but not most Americans), think that the world is a better place, with people like Milosevic driven from power, arrested, and imprisoned. That is, they support the RuleOfLaw in international relations, with real enforcement. And most would say that Americans like Ollie North, and Israelis like Sharon, have stepped over the line. We are finding ourselves increasingly isolated in the WarOnTerrorism, because of our insensitivity to this (and other) issues.
