One of the results of 9/11 is that we are returning to the policy that existed from 1950-1973, with Islamic fundamentalists playing the role of Communists

Of course, it is turning out that this was being planned well before 9/11, but the same folks, and as you say is gaining full bloom.

It's easy to dismiss the FP implications of all of the forces at work in the Executive Branch, and peruse unlimited complexities of relationships between lovely countries around the world, but -- call me simple-minded -- the effects of heavy-handedness on our part destroys these complexities and, as we saw yesterday with the two Koreas, ends up certainly simplifying things for everyone else in the world to this :

the USA vs Everyone Else.

Not exactly an ideal position to be headed for. Pretty soon, every treaty, agreement and relationship will up for grabs. With Ambassador Rumsfeld shooting his mouth off WWIII will end up being an economic war against the US.
