My great grandfather owned a slave. Came up from the South. GGF Fred gave him a job and put his salary in escrow as the guy didn't understand money. Eats and a place to sleep. Took him shopping for clothes and such and advised him on what he could buy.

Lincoln insisted that the issue of slavery and union could be separated. Nobody studied the war, the society, and the political situation more than him. By the time of his second inauguration he had changed his mind, coming to the conclusion that while union was a rationale, it was slavery that was at the core of the war.
