Except America won and lost the Civil War. While the rest of the first world had already abolished slavery, America fought its bloodiest war over it.

Southern states and school boards have little interest in buying text books portraying the South as seceding to protect slavery.

And America in general has little stomach for seeing itself as a nation willing to take up arms for the right to enslave an entire race.

It's only recently that the Civil War has been rightly portrayed as essentially about slavery.
