I agree. The experiment in individual freedom was too valuable to be fractured by division into two or even many.

R.E.Lee was certainly the preeminent commander of the war. He was blessed (IMO) by a greater percentage of dedicated fighters than was the north, but was destined ultimately to succumb to greater numbers in men and materiel.

I also believe that General Robert E. Lee was our greatest general.

I wonder how many Americans today realize that Arlington National Cemetery was Lee's pre-war home, turned into a burial place by a spiteful Union to prevent him from having a home to return to after the war?
