That says so much.

I have such a hard time convincing some folks that the war was RIGHT HERE for the Confederates. Perhaps I feel it more strongly because everywhere I look in Chattanooga, I see some reminder of the fighting or the suffering of civilians. There are not many really old buildings in the South.

I once dated a girl from NYC and while we were in Savannah, saw young people in full period dress and uniform leaving a Confederate Ball. When she inquired as to why people would still dress like that this many years after the War, I told her that she was now in a conquered country, just a few generations removed from the hostilities. She laughed and could not wrap her mind around it at all.
