I have long been interested in innovation - why it happens and what fosters it - and I think China will have to grant its' citizens a great deal more freedom if it is to become a great power in leading edge technology. It is one thing to invent by trial and error, which Edison sometimes practiced and cheap labor economies can accomplish simply by putting a lot of bodies to the task but it is another to have an atmosphere where today's great research can flourish.
