When faced with the threat of War and potential casualties it may help to remember a far greater threat - actual casualties of a continent- hopping disease called Aids
World wide 42 mm cases
New cases last year 5mm
Died last year 3mm
In the US 816,149 cases of which 149,000 in NY State
US deaths 462,000 to date
A war with Iraq might cost up to 10000 US lives at most, more likely far less .
Or 1/46 of the US Aids casualties
Compared with our ordinary daily risks of commuting and diseases it seems the cost of stopping Saddam dead in his tracks is minimal at the moment.
Let him continue and get just one working long range WMD and the risk factor or casualties will be multiplied by 10 or 100
And it is certain that he has or has tried to get long range missiles
