Basic operators may approach Trai on access charges

NEW DELHI: Warning that the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India’s move to equate limited mobility service with cellular service in terms of access charges may result in making WLL services less affordable for customers, private basic operators said on Wednesday they will soon approach Trai and the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) on the issue.

"Trai through its recent tariff amendment which has equated WLL (mobility) service with cellular service as regards Interconnect Usage Charges (IUC) is addressing cellular industries concerns to the detriment of basic service operators", S Ramakrishnan, the new President of Association of Basic Telecom Operators told reporters here.

The IUC regime will result in pushing up costs for the end customer, he said.

Asked about the impact of imposition of IUC charges, on WLL tariffs, he said: "Our cost of operation will increase...whether this cost is absorbed or passed on to consumers, the individual operators will have to decide. Some may decide to pass it on, while others may absorb."

He said basic players were yet to take a decision on this.

"It will definitely increase cost of operation in the long run one can't absorb it forever. One may do it initially to grow the market, but in the long run all costs will have to be recovered or we will not be viable," he sad.

Ramakrishnan, who is also the managing director of Tata Teleservices on Wednesday took over as the new President of ABTO from Rajiv Mehrotra.

Prakash C Bajpai, President of Reliance Infocomm has been elected as the new vice President.
