Shanghai Unicom sharpening CDMA technology

Shanghai Unicom Co. is heading into the third-stage development of its CDMA (Code-Division Multiple Access) technology, today's Youth Daily reported.

The company showcased CDMA1XEVDO, the core third-stage technology, at the ITU Telecom Asia 2002, which was held last month in Hong Kong.

Calling it a '2.75G' telecom technology, Shanghai Unicom said CDMA1XEVDO technology will allow a phone user to download from the Internet at a speed of 300 kilobits per second, nearly 10 times that of the existing 2G CDMAIS-95 network.

International Telecom Union has grouped CDMA1XEVDO into the 3G telecom technologies.

Shanghai Unicom has recently completed the second-stage development of its CDMA technology, and put the 2.5G CDMA1X standard in operation in Shanghai yesterday to upgrade the 2G CDMAIS-95 network.

The new CDMA 1X technology provides up to 153K/s of Internet connection.

With the upgraded technology, the company hopes to sharpen the competitive edge of its telecom services.

It aims to extend the 2.5G network to 1,000 local office buildings this year and add 500,000 new CDMA users.
