That's just plain absurd, Steven. The anti-war folks plead for Bush to do the right thing too. It is a particle of speech not a plot to run the universe.

It’s a figure of speech that reveals an attitude, and it’s an attitude that needs to be opposed wherever it appears, particularly when it appears in the mouths of those who wield power.

Watch them line up behind Powell next week, fresh with their take of the spoils of war.

I watched, and didn’t see too many people lining up. Don’t see many spoils to be had either. The primary “spoils” of this war will be the need to pour many billions of dollars into reconstruction, with precious little assurance that the money will ever be recovered. Iraq has oil, yes, but it will take years and many billions before enough money is earned from that oil to meet Iraq’s immediate needs, let alone paying back the cost of reconstruction. There is no assurance at all that the new Iraqi government will be interested in privatizing the oil industry (I would guess that to be extremely unlikely, in fact) or in paying back the money.

“Spoils of war” are not likely to be forthcoming, possibly a reason why so many people are unenthusiastic about the war.
