MQ,
US was isolationist back then, no doubt but it was the responsibility of france and england back then to nip hitler in the bud. No one in the US disparages the bravery of aussies or new zealanders or any other foes of Hitler and Tojo. I do not why you think so if you do.
The danger now for the world is not US preemption or go it alone if necessary rhetoric--it is a return to isolationism in the US.
I know this country well, i think. And the same folks who are interventist now, one day might throw up their hands in disgust and say Fortress America.
The rest of the world is far more vulnerable than we are to attack. And internally an anti-arab or anti-jewish mentality can arise(pick your poison) blaming one or both of these groups for americas woes. Bye bye global economy along with the global village. And the left then will stand alone as internationalists and rue the day they let their hatred of George Bush blind them to the dangers. <gg-very dramatic dont you think> mike

To me your inferential logic seems a bit simplistic. New Zealand is not and I don't think ever was a melting pot. New Zealanders speak english. It's a fairly homogenous culture with roots in England I believe.

America of 1940 was a melting pot of many of the huddled masses who clearly wanted to get the hell out of Europe.

The leadership in America knew what was going on and in the political reality of the time gave as much help as possible.

Independent of the declaration of War, the timing of events of WW II were dictated by logistics as well.

Today technology keeps all far more informed about what is really happening anywhere in the world.

res- Part of the problem for the USA and why they get stick from the rest of the world is the braggart attitude that they are the keeper of the flame of freedom. They* think they invented freedom. They think others should toady to them

Maurice, I think part of the problem is that America doesn't have the luxury of waiting for New Zealand to do something about Saddam. We believe it's primarily up to us to solve this problem. And it really is...

France, Germany and others have the luxury of sitting on a high horse and moralizing, because, deep down they know the responsibility rests on America's shoulders to take care of Saddam.

How many of New Zealand's fine soldiers are involved in the battle to oust Saddam?

They* think they invented freedom.

We did, Mq. Read the first draft of the Declaration of Independence. It is the first concise statement of freedom ever published.
