I don't mind some side discussion on generalship, myself, but Shiloh should be consulted. My father- in- law worked for Eisenhower at SHAEF (chief of clerical staff). He met all of the "stars" in that theater, plus a few who would tour through, like Marshall. He always thought Eisenhower was the best. But then, Eisenhower was a very good boss......

Probably not a bad idea, although-- the notion of choosing the best general ever,- regardless of era, is intriguing.

But comparing generals of differing vintages would probably be hampered by similar problems that hamstring the attempt to contrast sports figures from different eras: its a different game these days, techniques have evolved so much, global recruiting has fortified the talent pool, big money has impacted the activity, etc. <g>

EDIT: Upon working through subsequent replies, I see that George has beaten me to the draw on this idea, and far more succinctly at that...bravo, Mr. Coyne!
