One of the most basic fundamentals of period tactics involved trying to maneuver in such a way that your entire army could isolate and attack a smaller portion of the enemy, a mismatch that would practically guarantee victory.

Much of Lee's reputation came from his willingness to further divide his already outnumbered troops in the face of the enemy, allowing the opposition the opportunity to catch him in a classic mismatch.

Chancellorsville is the textbook example of this.
