Generals (almost) always fight the last war.

An excellent point, LL and one that explains the actions of many Civil War generals who had been Mexican War heroes, Bragg being the most extreme example.

He was a bona fide hero in that war. Songs were written about him, men admired him and women adored him. (He was quite handsome in those days and cut a dashing figure astride his warhorse).

How many among us would want to do anything but what had earned us such favor?
