I'm glad you posted that. A couple of my friends-- poets who run an independent poetry press-- were invited to that event. She, like me, is not a Bush supporter and against the impending action in Iraq without solid proof of the existence of WMD's. As soon as she received the invitation, she was contacted by the organizer of the protest. She demurred, her reason being that poetry needs the support of the administration, now more than ever-- particularly an administration at best lukewarm to the NEA.

It didn't take long for Laura Bush's people to get wind of the protest plans and I don't blame them a bit for cancelling the event. But I can tell you one thing: It's a GD'ed shame that the group of proesting poets let their self-righteous indignation get in the way of the promotion of something they love, something they struggle to write and publish, something which humanizes and heals: poetry.

Funny, I'm anti-war admirer of poets, but not a poet. If invited, I would have gone to the First Lady's Symposium. Your Mr. Sam Hamill shot off his nose to spite his face.

Being anti-war doesn't mean you're afraid so afraid of it that you will dishonor yourself, bow to tyrants instead of resisting them, allowing evil to triumph rather than stopping it. Being anti-war means that you hate war so much that you will engage in it only to stop those things after exhausting all other courses of action. That's what the President is doing, and the poets who refuse to acknowledge it are only making fools of themselves.

Dear Chris: ANYONE who slanders Laura Bush in my presence will have their ass kicked. She is a Lady through and through. JDN

Mrs. Bush has all the class in the world, quite unlike the guardian which is a POS rag. Sell it to the Donkeys.
