JW, what would the affect be if the US government was to secretly start ammassing gold futures, shares of gold companies, and printing lots of $ to buy physical gold.
Let's hypothetically assume this can be done for a year before anyone notices.

Then lets assume the US goes on a gold standard and say pegs the POG at say $4,000/oz and lets it "float" in the range of say 3,000 to 5,000.

What % of our problems could be solved by this if we could pull it off? Long term it would not solve balance of trade problems, create jobs or anything else like that, but what would it do to debt issues?

re trade deficit -- I still am not buying an expansion, but at least I found something that supports your view over the longer term (look at the reply I am responding to here). I would be curious to see if this fellows ideas parallel your own. thanks
