But I can understand the viewpoint of those who'd rather contain. Like you said, war is indeed a pretty serious enterprise.

This may not mean much to you, but I am proud of you. War is hell.

Ted, <Most will agree that Powell did not provided a smoking gun today.>

If the inspectors found a large cache of biological and chemical weapons today, would you support a strike tomorrow?

Let's face reality here. Iraq has those weapons, and they're playing the inspectors for fools. Powell clearly shows that. What we do after that is unclear: Contain or strike? Personally, I think we'll save more lives and more money if we strike. But I can understand the viewpoint of those who'd rather contain. Like you said, war is indeed a pretty serious enterprise.

Oh, I need to make myself clear. I may be wrong since I haven't seen his speech in its entirety but I don't think Powell has come up with a smoking gun. However, I do think he's convinced enough people that Iraq is a threat and we will be at war by the end of February.

After seeing Al's post, he's right your empathy is much appreciated. I think we all could use some on this thread.

I could understand those viewpoints, too -- EXCEPT --
containment doesn't address the human rights situation within Iraq, and the people who are most adamant about merely containing Iraq are (for the most part) the same people who were totally supportive of Clinton ousting Milosivec. Thus, there is an inherent hypocrisy -- which makes it very difficult to support the position.
