sig, I have come to the conclusion that the shuttle was doomed by harmonic or a buffering disturbance due anomalies to the underside of the shuttle's left wing. One item twice of two items hit the wing setting up a ripple effect to occur during reentry. None of the tiles, by themselves, were damaged to caused them fail individually or in groups from the heat of reentry. But a couple of groves long enough, at the forces seen during reentry could very well set up the kind of buffering that might have disturbed the glide properties of the wing.
