Bush to Hitler and US conservative republicans to the Nazi party demonstrates the inadequacy of most people's knowledge of history these days. I assume that most of those who make this comparison majored in science, or literature, and never had a real history class in their lives, or else never went to college, but stopped at high school or technical school. Nobody was blindsided by Hitler, except maybe the Germans in 1933, which he took power. Among the earliest acts after he took power (1933-1934) were to repudiate the Treaty of Versailles, begin rearmament, withdraw from the League of Nations, set up concentration camps (Dachau was established in 1933), and start purging and murdering political enemies, including the members of the Communist and Socialist parties, trade unionists, and his former allies, the Brown Shirts. Jews were driven from every part of civil society. They were thrown out of schools, universities, and forbidden to hold any public office, no matter how minor. Hitler acted swiftly and ruthlessly to set up a totalitarian regime which did not tolerate any dissent. Even joking that Goering was fat or Himmler was a poofter was ground to be sent to a concentration camp, which were "re-education" camps for ordinary Germans, although they were also death camps for those whom the Reich considered to be real enemies. He abolished the German Constitution and the German government save for himself. These things were accomplished in 1993-1934, and just kept getting worse. In 1939, when Chamberlain tried to persuade Hitler to be satisfied with the Sudentenland, the problem was that Germany was too strong to stop at that point. Everybody knew what they were dealing with, but nobody knew what to do.
