Don't disagree with the larger implications here....but do you really think Bush adm. is already lining things up/positioning for a polarizing decades-long battle w/China....I don't think they are that strategically-forward looking on this (if it is a consideration, certainly not deal maker).

IMO, Bush adm. convinced Saddam enormous threat, and to some degree payback involved, although I don't know to what extent. Everything else (China, economic considerations) so anxillary that they are not really worth mentioning in this particular decision. In fact, there may be NO (positive) economic argument for going to war with Iraq, and controlling their relatively small supply.
