The closest parallel in recent history to Saddam’s Iraq is to be found in Stalin’s Russia.

I'm not surprised the author couldn't bring himself to make the proper analogy - Iran's SAVAK secret police under the Shah. That wouldn't fit with his political objectives.

But, thanks for informing us that Saddam is a brutal tyrant. Keep the hot news flashes coming!

I don't think you'll find anyone posting here who doesn't believe Saddam is a tryant. But as John Quincy Adams once wrote, we shouldn't go abroad seeking monsters.
