tejek,

re:he doesn't dispute whether the war is right or not; instead he accepts its inevitability

Having worked side by side with the Air Force for eight years in Korea I know the type well. I was asked to go to Saudi with our system but declined since my wife just had twins and not knowing how long I would be gone, taking care of two households remotely from Saudi, getting killed was more than I could risk for myself or them. Life insurance was also void if killed in war.

I knew many people that went, every last one of them was a volunteer. Their Korean wives just didn't understand why they volunteered, I asked one of the Captains on our project and he said - This is why I joined and what I've been trained for. Opportunities to serve in combat only come once in awhile. He wanted to be a part of something bigger than himself, I also suspect it would be a credit to his resume as he wanted to make the Air Force a career.

I've worn the chem gear and done the training and know how hot it get's in all that gear, and that's just a spring day in Korea. I had to drive around one day wearing that junk. Swore those damn booties would get stuck under the accelerator. We even wore it indoors and typed with pencils as the gloves are huge.

The President is their boss, regardless of Party affiliation and they follow his lawful orders without question. Of course it helps if the cause is moral and the government goes to lengths to make sure everyone knows why they're going. That is the legacy of Vietnam within the military.

I do worry that Saddam will use chemicals this time around as he's signing his own death warrant and dooming his legacy for Uday Hussein. I hope we can locate all the weapons before they use them and destroy them on the ground.
